Cybit OpenAPI connectivity extends telematics functionality

  • New open interface enables full integration of core telematics data with existing enterprise applications
  • Supports partners looking to bring new telematics-enabled applications to market more quickly

Cybit, the UK’s leading online telematics service provider, has made it easier for organisations to integrate core telematics data into their existing enterprise solutions by announcing a new Open Applications Programming Interface (API) for its web-based Fleetstar-Online telematics system. Cybit’s OpenAPI interface provides a standard way for almost any third party system to connect easily, cost-effectively and securely to Fleetstar-Online, avoiding the complex and expensive integration issues normally associated with linking to corporate databases and enterprise environments.

Cybit's new OpenAPI interface capability provides direct access to core Cybit telematics information – including GPS positioning data held in extensive data sets. This information is stored in Fleetstar-Online's clustered SQL Server 2000 database that already handles all the vehicle and asset tracking data for hundreds of commercial fleets and thousands of vehicles. Integrating with Fleetstar-Online enables Cybit customers, for example, to directly compare volume telematics-derived data with information held within their enterprise and database systems. This might include comparing actual activity derived from the Fleetstar-Online platform with planning tool derived data, matching driver hours worked with payroll systems, or producing more comprehensive analysis of data for strategic planning purposes.

"Many organisations are increasingly recognising the value of the business information that’s locked within their telematics data. With our new OpenAPI interface, we're effectively unlocking this information and giving organisations the flexibility they need to develop an entirely new generation of leading-edge telematics-enabled asset management solutions. There are clearly significant commercial opportunities here," commented Cybit's CEO, Richard Horsman.

"We're already working with major organisations such as Norwich Union, Lex Vehicle Leasing and brs Truck Rental to provide them with the core telematics technology they need to add incremental value and innovation to their existing applications and solutions," he continued. "With Cybit OpenAPI, businesses can now introduce entirely new products and services based on our raw telematics data feeds."

Customers can connect to the Fleetstar-Online system and retrieve a range of raw data extracts, as well as formatted, live feeds and inbound data. Typical information could include fleet and vehicle details, location information, speed and heading details, and data relationships. Volume data requests are then made to the Cybit API Server which processes and manages all communications.

Cybit's OpenAPI interface is based on XML, allowing calls from any operating environment. A specialist OpenAPI developer pack provides details of the SOAP/XML schema and details of raw data formats, while a range of connection options are available, including direct connection to Cybit's servers using SOAP/XML and the ability to link using the Fleetstar ActiveX control.
