"Lasso” Captures Cell Phone Viruses

Langen, Germany, April 13th, 2005 – Phonebook entries are erased or expensive long-distance calls are made as if by an invisible hand. This could be an everyday occurrence in the future, because the introduction of Java technology to the mobile telephony world and the latest devices that include additional features such as organizers etc. have exposed the structure of the cell phone operating systems and made them vulnerable to attacks by illegal foreign codes. Providers have now a new responsibility. systeam and NetOptics were presenting a solution at this year’s CeBIT.

With "Lasso”, NetOptics has developed a form of technology that never before existed – a trend-setting innovation for the global market. "Lasso” is a hardware-based solution, that inspects network traffic up to Gigabit speed in real-time. It searches the data stream for up to 1,000 signatures and performs also deep content inspection of emails and email attachments.

When utilized by cell phone providers and telecommunications companies, it can identify current viruses that were previously defined as signatures and strings. Depending on the configuration of the device, the perceived threat is automatically blocked, removed and forwarded and/or a report is sent to the administrator.
