AMEY CHOOSES KUBOTA TO BUILD UP MINIS FLEET

Amey Infrastructure Services is the latest in a long list of top national companies to add Kubota mini excavators to its fleet.

It has bought 28 Kubota machines - its first - from official distributor Leach Lewis Plant Ltd’s Oxford depot.

Amey is a leading provider of integrated business and infrastructure services to the public and private sector and works closely with central and local government to develop major projects, including PFI and PPP projects, in the education, health, rail transport and defence sectors.

Services range from the management of large scale transportation infrastructure to the delivery of professional and back office services, all of which are underpinned by leading-edge technology and a genuine partnering philosophy.

It has been hiring in Kubota minis from the GAP Group for several years, so has first-hand experience of the capabilities of the versatile machines, and their operators like using them.

The 20 1.5 tonne KX36-3 cabbed machines and eight 2.5 tonne U20-3 zero tail swing cabbed models were immediately put to work on major long-term contracts including traffic maintenance duties for Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire County Councils.

With a maximum travelling speed of 2.2 km/hr, the KX36-3 has a 950mm long arm providing a maximum digging force of 7.2kN (735 kgf). The digging force of the bucket is 13.0 kN (1327 kgf).

The U20-3 is one of a five-strong Kubota range of sub-5-tonne zero tail swing machines. It combines impressive operator comfort and environmental efficiency with unmatched 360-degree manoeuvrability.

It is designed for fast, convenient movement between sites and safe, high performance digging operations, particularly in confined or awkward areas.

By keeping the rear engine hood within the track at all times, it is able to work safely close to buildings, walls and busy roads or pavements without restriction, enabling the operator to concentrate fully on the task in hand.

Said Roger Venthen, Service Director of Operational Support at Amey: “As well as hiring in machines such as minis, we realise the long-term economic benefits and advantages to efficiency of owning our own plant.

“After looking closely at all the various makes of minis, we came to the conclusion that Kubota offered the best range in the industry, backed by a tried and tested national support network.

“They are state-of-the-art machines, well known and respected in the industry, and should deliver a useful residual value at the end of their working life with us.”

The decision to buy Kubota was largely influenced by the availability of the new Kubota Anti-Theft system fitted as standard.  Now available on all new Kubota minis, it’s based on an individually programmed key for each machine that replaces the former universal starter key. The key has an identification code embedded in an IC chip that incorporates a state-of-the-art immobiliser system.

It starts and stops the engine like a conventional ignition key, and also opens the machine’s cab door, fuel filler cap and engine canopy. Without it, the fuel, hydraulic and electric systems are fully immobilised. Any attempt to start the machine with an un-programmed key activates the system’s alarm.

Also important to Amey was the ability of the zero tail swing machines to get into the tightest of restricted areas and then work to their full capacity.

With their overall weights well below the 3.5 tone towing limit, Amey can tow both models from site to site, even when carrying accessories such as buckets.

Kubota is the UK, European and world leader in mini excavators and provides the largest range of minis available from a single manufacturer. Customers can select from 18 base models, spanning the weight range from 850 kg to 8-tonne, and including the widest choice of the increasingly popular zero tail swing machines.

Kubota mini excavators have a legendary reputation for quality, performance, reliability and excellent resale values, together with unbeatable support from a nationwide network of specialist dealers, and their versatility makes them the ideal tool for many different applications and end-users, from civil engineering to landscaping and plant hire companies to owner operators.
