ReviewCentre.com finds half of drivers under 21 have claimed on their car insurance

  • Just 14 per cent of drivers over 60 make car insurance claims
  • Age rather than gender influences claim likelihood
  • Supports findings from the Commons Transport committee that 17-19 year olds are ten times more likely to crash than 30 year olds

Manchester, UK - 9th January, 2007 - ReviewCentre.com, the UK's leading consumer review website, has revealed that 50 per cent of Britain's young drivers have made a claim on their car insurance, whereas the ratio for drivers over 60 is only 14 per cent. The findings come from the ReviewCentre.com car insurance category where customers rate and review the standard of their car insurance service, and list their age, sex and whether or not they made a claim as part of the process. The overall proportion of male and female drivers of all ages that made car insurance claims was almost identical - showing that age rather than gender is the key indicator of how probable a driver is to have an accident.

The findings support recent concerns that young drivers are involved in a disproportionately high amount of accidents. Recent research by the Commons Transport committee suggests 17-19 year olds are 10 times more likely to have a car accident than those over 30. In November 2006, the Brake road safety charity launched a campaign to impose tougher restrictions on young drivers, after its reports claimed half of drivers under 24 break the speed limit by at least 10mph, and one in five drive whilst under the influence of alcohol. The government has yet to respond to demands to reform the driving laws, despite recent pressure from the Scottish National Party to ban teenagers from motorways and driving at night.

"The figures taken from the Reviewcentre.com Car Insurance site confirm what has been reported in the news recently - drivers under 21 are involved in a higher proportion of road accidents than any other age group," commented Gaynor Holt, Chief Operations Officer at Resource Team. "This shows that as drivers get older and gain more experience, they are involved in progressively less accidents. It was also interesting to see that there was no difference between the claim ratio of men and women."
