Berlin Semantic Web Day at Freie Universitaet Berlin

The first Berlin Semantic Web Day, recently held at the Freie Universitaet Berlin, attracted about 60 participants from industry and research. The Berlin Semantic Web Day was organized by the BMBF project Corporate Semantic Web under direction of Prof. Dr. Adrian Paschke in collaboration with STI Germany and is-research.

The main topic of the next Berlin Semantic Web Day was Semantic Business Process Management (SBPM), which is the combination of Corporate Semantic Web technologies, such as (semantic) rules, events and ontologies, with BPM. This unique combination promises enhanced automation in discovery, configuration and composition, automated mediation between different heterogeneous interfaces and abstraction levels, and in general much more agile business process management.

It offered informative and exciting talks. Dr. Hartmut Strauß, CTO for IT systems at the national standardization body DIN e.V., illustrated advantages of standards in every day life. Dr. Frauke Weichhardt, co-founder of the Semtation GmbH, presented the Microsoft Visio-based Semantic BPM tool "SemTalk" and Paul Vincent, CTO for Business Rules and Event Processing at TIBCO Software, presented the different TIBCO solutions for rule- and event-based business process management.

In parallel to this public lecture track an industry training seminar about practical applications of semantic technologies in enterprises took place. It primarily addressed decision makers and project manager who wanted to learn more about the advantages and the state of art in using Semantic Web technologies in corporate IT applications.

The first Berlin Semantic Web Day was completed by the second Berlin Semantic Web Meetup in the evening. Duane Nickull, a Semantic Web evangelist at Adobe Systems, gave an interesting keynote about the OASIS SOA reference architecture, which he is developing as a co-chair of the OASIS SOA group, and about Adobe's work on Semantic Web technologies. In the following relaxed atmosphere of the Meetup with drinks, buffet and music interesting discussions about semantic technologies in businesses came up and new views and ideas were exchanged.

The next Corporate Semantic Web day and the 3rd Berlin Semantic Web Meetup will be at the Xinnovations 2009 on September 14, 2009: http://www.xinnovations.de/workshops.html.
