Cybit fleet tracking solution helps Pectel ensure safe removal of asbestos

  • Fleetstar-Online will monitor leading asbestos removal company's vehicles in real-time to ensure secure transport and safe disposal of loads
  • Enables Pectel to fulfil duty of care to employees and customers, and improve vehicle efficiency and customer service

Pectel-Group, the UK’s leading asbestos removal and construction services company, has ordered a telematics and fleet management solution from Cybit to monitor its teams of asbestos removal workers 24/7. Pectel will use Cybit's Fleetstar-Online in-vehicle units to track its specially modified vans in real-time across the UK to help ensure asbestos loads are transported and disposed of safely. The solution will enable Pectel to fulfil its duty of care to employees and customers, and provide powerful historical reporting capabilities to improve Pectel's vehicle efficiency and customer service.

Pectel provides a range of construction services and is the market leader in the technology and management of safe asbestos removal, with customers including London Underground, the Houses of Parliament, British Telecom and the National Grid. Fleetstar-Online will enable Pectel to track its vans in real-time to ensure that its asbestos loads are transported securely and arrive at the disposal site safely. Its advanced reporting capabilities will help make further improvements to efficiency and customer service. Pectel chose Fleetstar-Online ahead of competing vendor products including Tracker because of the solution’s ease, speed and low cost of implementation.

Jason Bell, Group Health and Safety Officer, Pectel said: "Asbestos is a highly friable carcinogenic material, so it’s essential to have tight safety procedures in place from the moment our workers ‘suit-up’ to the safe disposal of the asbestos. Maintaining a totally sealed environment is vital, as is knowing the whereabouts of our teams 24/7 - and the Fleetstar-Online telematics and fleet management solution provides this capability for us. If a vehicle breaks down or a driver gets lost, for example, Fleetstar-Online tells us exactly where the load is so we can ensure that it still reaches its destination safely. This is an important initiative for Pectel, and we are projecting an early return on investment."

Richard Horsman, CEO of Cybit said: "The issue of transporting hazardous cargo is a sensitive one, and open to the advantages of telematics technology. Normally when a truck carrying some kind of hazardous materials, such as asbestos, is involved in a crash or a spill, the authorities and company will spend far too much time finding out that an incident has occurred and where it is. Having the level of information offered by Fleetstar-Online and utilised by Pectel saves money, time and potentially lives."

John Wisdom, Sales and Marketing Director at Cybit added: "In addition to the safety benefits, Fleetstar-Online’s dynamic fleet management capabilities will provide Pectel’s fleet managers with up-to-the-minute traffic information to help get the hazardous load to its destination as quickly as possible. The solution’s powerful reporting capabilities will also enable fleet managers to measure journey times, average speeds, vehicle mileage and unscheduled stops to maintain high levels of individual and fleet driving performance. These tools offer the opportunities to make dramatic improvements in efficiency as well as improved visibility of the asbestos removal process."

Fleetstar-Online provides companies employing a mobile workforce with cost-effective ASP-based fleet management capabilities and rapid return on investment. Fleet vehicles are fitted with a small electronic in-vehicle-unit (IVU) which is tracked by GPS in real-time and data transmitted to Cybit’s online control centre to be accessed by users over the Internet with a standard web browser. Fleetstar-Online’s ‘anytime, anywhere’ fleet management tools include real-time location-based tracking of vehicles, up-to-the-minute traffic information, route planning and scheduling, historical reporting and analysis, journey replay, exception reporting and SMS capabilities.

About Pectel Group
Pectel Limited was formed in 1982 as an asbestos removal firm, based in Southend. In 1988, after several years of successful growth, and having begun to establish a healthy reputation, the company relocated to new premises on the Burnt Mills Industrial Estate in Basildon. Developments in market activities saw the formation of Pectel Contract Services in 1995. This increased the scope of services provided by Pectel to include building works, roofing and refurbishment, thus giving the company more control in asbestos removal projects. In 1999, customer driven requirements from our Asbestos Removal operations involving air ducts necessitated the formation of Pectel Air Management Systems. This enabled the Group to supply a specialist Duct Clean/Fumigation and Mechanical Engineering service for laboratories and hospitals.
