New York, US – 7 July, 2009 – IndiePix, the Internet-based distributor of independent films, is to launch 21 BELOW, into Europe, at the Galway Film Fleadh. 21 BELOW, which had great success in the US, was one of just a handful of films selected by the festival's organizers. The film is IndiePix's final 'Release Slate 08' production – IndiePix provided 21 BELOW with essential funds and resources to produce the film, including a state-of-the-art editing suite at IndiePix NYC offices. The film's European premiere at the festival is set to take place on Thursday July 9th at 5pm BST.
21 BELOW is the story of a young woman going home to face family wounds that she had hoped to escape. But on her return, she discovers that family feuds she hoped to alleviate could just as easily destroy her: the daughter of her younger sister is dying from a rare genetic disease; her mother is hurt by the difficult life choices involving the birth of a child by an African-American former gang member. Every gesture of help seems to turn into a fight. The dilemma is whether the tragic circumstances of a dying child can bring some perspective to a seemingly hopeless situation.
IndiePix Studios launched its first release slate in 2008 and has since produced five worldwide successes – including award-winning and internationally acclaimed 'The End of America' and award-winning 'Entre Nos'. It selected first-time filmmaker trio Samantha Buck, Jenny Maguire and Sophia Raab Downs – who the storyline is based on – and helped them produce, launch and distribute 21 BELOW. IndiePix has since supported the film beyond financing by creating a purpose-built editing suite at its offices specifically for the film. The entire post-production of the film took eight months – taking the film to four years in the making.
"Without IndiePix we wouldn't have a film," explained Samantha Buck, director of 21 BELOW. "The fact that it has been able to dedicate so much time and money to our film in the current economy is incredible. Ours was the first film to be chosen by the newly created IndiePix Studios in 2008 and the team has been very supportive ever since. They even built an editing suite at their NYC offices, which we used for around eight months – I don't know of any other company that would have done that for us.
"Jenny Maguire, who I worked alongside to make 21 BELOW, has family roots in Ireland so to have our European launch here at Galway is wonderful," continued Samantha Buck. "Jenny, Sophia and I all hoped for worldwide sales and, following the film's recent success at SilverDocs in Washington DC, Galway is bringing us another step closer to achieving our ultimate goal."
Bob Alexander, President of IndiePix, added: "This is a visually stunning film with a very unique storyline, covering issues of race, religion and motherhood. For these reasons we did what we had to in order to ensure it was finished and seen by a diverse audience of film fans. We were on board to offer help and guidance when it was needed but the filmmakers knew what they wanted the final cut to look like – we are delighted that we were able to make it a reality for them."
Director Samantha Buck will take part in the industry panel, Directors in Dialog: International Documentary Special on July 12th. For more information please visit the festival's website
