Enterprise information management specialist brings 'Topic Map' solution to the UK

  • NetworkedPlanet brings enhanced information management and search capabilities to UK organisations

NetworkedPlanet, a leading developer of topic map processing tools and applications for the Microsoft .NET framework, has launched a new consultancy and product development service for the UK market. Following successful implementation projects in partnership with leading consultants and systems integrators in Norway, NetworkedPlanet will now introduce its TMCore05 Topic Maps solution to address the growing requirement for enterprise information management among medium to large-enterprises. The organisation also offers consultancy services around the use of topic maps in applications of all kinds. NetworkedPlanet’s team contains experienced topic map practitioners with many years experience in developing both tools and real-world solutions using topic maps, and assisting with the architecture and design of both the topic map and the applications that make use of it.

NetworkedPlanet's flagship product, TMCore05, is based on open standards to enable full integration with an organisation’s existing file and content management applications. The solution utilises the power of topic maps – dubbed “the GPS of the information universe” – and empowers employees with rapid retrieval of the knowledge they need to do their jobs more efficiently. TMCore05 provides users with the unique flexibility to add new relationships to those already in place within the topic map system and configures the changes automatically, without interrupting the running of the system. The solution offers a robust store for multiple topic maps and a high-level web services interface that allows both reading and updating of topic maps using SOAP-based web service calls. NetworkedPlanet has developed further modules that integrate with Microsoft SharePoint and the content management system EPiServer.

“Our topic maps solution is a stand-alone system that can be fully integrated with an organisation’s existing applications, regardless of where on the network they are,” explains Kal Ahmed, founder of NetworkedPlanet. “It enables organisations to gain quick and easy access to information and removes the laborious task of manually searching through systems and folders to locate a particular document. Thanks to the technology behind topic maps, once a document is located the user can easily see other items that are related to the document or search terms, enabling easy navigation of the entire system.”

Norwegian postal operator Posten has selected NetworkedPlanet’s TMCore05 as part of the implementation of a Microsoft SharePoint portal. The solution will enhance the efficiency of more than 24,000 employees at the postal service, enabling them to access vital documents and information rapidly and ensuring the right information can be located the first time without the need for additional searches.

Topic maps are an ISO standard designed to address the problem of information access management, and enables both developers and users to organise and navigate information in a topic or subject-oriented manner. Topic maps are used to provide structure to information and enable organisations to access that information faster and more easily view related information that may have been missed by a more conventional search. Topic maps are non-intrusive and sit above file and content management systems already in place. Currently the most common application for topic maps is for building websites that are entirely driven by the topic map as they provide the site structure and part of the page content.
