DS2 Director re-elected Chairman of ETSI Powerline Committee

  • Victor Dominguez's key objective to develop standards for powerline technology that unite the industry
  • ETSI Powerline Technical Committee will collaborate with IEEE

Valencia, SPAIN - 22 May, 2007 - Victor Dominguez, Director of Strategy and Standardisation at DS2, the world's leading Powerline Chipset provider, has been re-elected as Chairman of the Powerline Technical Committee of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). His key objective as chairman of this influential committee will be to work for the development of global standards and specifications for powerline technologies. Under his chairmanship the committee has made significant advances to ensure the co-existence and interoperability of powerline technologies to enable organisations to extend their presence in the rapidly growing powerline market. Other candidates for Chairman of the Committee represented proprietary powerline technologies.

DS2 is committed to the creation of open standards for powerline technologies, and is also a key member of the Universal Powerline Association (UPA) and the IEEE. The UPA works with companies around the world to create open standards and specifications that help ensure powerline products coexist and interoperate both between themselves and with other technologies. These standards and specifications are shared with both ETSI and the IEEE, to ensure the integrity and comprehensiveness of broadly adopted standards that unite the industry.

"The ETSI standards for powerline are essential for the growth and maturation of this rapidly growing industry, to provide global specifications to ensure all products and applications meet high Quality of Service needs," commented Victor Dominguez, Director of Strategy and Standardisation, DS2 and Chairman of the ETSI Powerline Technical Committee. "As an active member of the UPA, I have been heavily involved in the provision of guidelines for co-existence and interoperability to support growth in the industry. It is important for the ETSI Powerline Technical Committee to use its existing insights, as well as input from other ETSI member organisations, to help make the industry even more inclusive and open to new innovators.

"The UPA and DS2 are also collaborating in great detail with the IEEE, which is working in parallel with ETSI to produce Powerline standards. ETSI and the IEEE are liaising frequently to ensure that standardisation work is well coordinated," continued Victor Dominguez.

About ETSI
The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) is an independent, non-profit organisation, whose mission is to produce telecommunications standards for today and for the future. ETSI unites 655 members from 59 countries inside and outside Europe, including manufacturers, network operators, administrations, service providers, research bodies and users - in fact, all the key players in the ICT arena.

ETSI is officially responsible for standardisation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) within Europe. These technologies include telecommunications, broadcasting and related areas such as intelligent transportation and medical electronics.

ETSI plays a major role in developing a wide range of standards and other technical documentation as Europe's contribution to world-wide ICT standardisation. This activity is supplemented by interoperability testing services and other specialisms. ETSI's prime objective is to support global harmonisation by providing a forum in which all the key players can contribute actively. ETSI is officially recognised by the European Commission and the EFTA secretariat.

ETSI's Members determine the Institute's work programme, allocate resources and approve its deliverables. As a result, ETSI's activities are closely aligned with market needs and there is wide acceptance of its products. ETSI's standards are built on consensus.

About DS2
DS2 is the world's leading supplier of the 200 Mbps technology that enables home networking and broadband access over power line, coaxial cable, and telephone wire. DS2 pioneered the industry with the introduction of its 200 Mbps chipsets, creating the fastest and highest performance solution for simultaneous data, digital audio and high-definition video transmission. Two pre-eminent industry groups, the Universal Powerline Association (UPA, www.upaplc.org) and the European Union consortium OPERA (Open PLC European Research Alliance) have adopted DS2 technology in support of multi-vendor standard certified product.
