  • Documentary and Classic Drama style films cover range of Human Rights issues - from Durfur to North Carolina

  • Launched to coincide with the UN National Human Rights Day - 10th December 2007

New York, US - 10 December 2007 - IndiePix.net, the leading distributor of critically acclaimed and hard-to-find independent films, has announced its latest collection: a series of films that promote global Human Rights issues - from Durfur to California. The launch coincides with the UN's National Human Rights Day on December 10th 2007, which aims to raise awareness of Human Rights abuses around the world. Members of the public, as well as educational bodies and broadcasters can view film trailers and purchase films from the collection here.

The nine films in the collection are some of the most powerful and thought provoking films within the IndiePix catalogue of over 3,000 independent films. They have been compiled to raise awareness of the different kinds of Human Rights violations individuals face and to demonstrate the tremendous strength and courage of these people.

Amongst the collection is The Times of Harvey Milk, which portrays the life of the first openly gay man elected to political office in California. Harvey Milk's tremendous courage and humanity, as he fought for the civil rights of all people, soars above the prejudices of his day. The film chronicles the successes of his life and the tragedy of his assassination. Also included in the collection is the critically acclaimed 1966 film, Battle of Algiers. Director Gillo Pontecorvo presents a harrowing, documentary-style depiction of the Algerian people's struggle to liberate themselves from France between 1954 and 1962. This film has won over 12 industry awards, including a BAFTA for the UN Award in 1972.

"Human Rights issues are never far away from the media glare. In recent years, Hollywood has produced some outstanding works but it is the real-life and often-harrowing depiction of an independent film that portrays the untold story of the people involved," commented Bob Alexander, President of IndiePix.

"Our collection gives Human Rights a human face and covers issues on a global scale from racial conflict in North Carolina, homosexual hostility in California to the battlefields of Iraq. Amnesty International has recently started using social networking sites, like Facebook and Bebo, to promote Human Rights on a wider scale and this is the ultimate aim of our collection. By giving people the opportunity to learn about and gain an understanding of these events is one of the best ways to encourage action against them," Bob Alexander continued.
